The Bank of England deploys Becrypt

New CESG Commercial Product Assurance enables data to be easily and quickly protected to IL 3 (RESTRICTED) level to support flexible working.

The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom. Founded in 1694, it was nationalised on 1 March 1946 and more recently gained independence in 1997. Standing at the centre of the UK’s financial system, the Bank is committed to promoting and maintaining monetary and financial stability as its contribution to a healthy economy.

Since its foundation, it has been the Government’s banker and, since the late 1800’s, banker to the banking system more generally - the bankers’ bank. Like all organisations managing financial data, security is paramount. The Bank has recently deployed Becrypt cyber security

solutions for use on bank issued laptops for over 1500 new staff, due to join in early 2013 as part of the newly formed subsidiary Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), previously part of the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

Securing laptops for flexible working Becrypt’s DISK Protect Foundation, which is CPA certified, was selected over competitive security solutions for its ability to provide assured full disk encryption for laptop PCs handling data up to Impact Level 3 (RESTRICTED), while being easy to deploy centrally by the IT department across the organisation.

According to James Lamyman, Solutions Architect in the IT Department at the Bank of England; “We had reached a point where we needed to review our data at rest solution and the joining of the new subsidiary PRA staff, previously FSA, provided an excellent catalyst to do this.

“Currently the FSA provides a laptop solution to support its staff members working practices which include flexible within the office as well as remotely as they visit banks and insurance agencies.

We need to supply a system that could provide the flexibility to continue to support this mode of working whilst maintaining security. We have a long relationship of working with Becrypt and knew of their specialism in encryption technologies that could enable this.”

Central management minimises disruption to users DISK Protect Foundation provides full disk encryption for protectively marked data up to Impact level 3 (RESTRICTED). Commercial Product Assurance (CPA) is the new scheme from CESG, the UK Government’s National Technical Authority for Information Assurance that gives assurance for commercial products. It is suitable for virtually all data held by local

authorities, blue light services, NHS and central government, while avoiding the complexity of managing CESG key material.

“We wanted to move to the new CPA scheme of data protection, which has been CESG approved and Becrypt was the only

company that could provide this level of protection at this time. We also wanted the ability to deploy Augmented level to provide a higher level of security should it be required. The endorsement from CESG provided us with the assurance that Becrypt was the right choice.” said James.
